OPEN WHEEL SHOWDOWN TO FEATURE MIDGETS X2 IN 2024

With the recent announcement that Davey Hamilton Jr’s Open Wheel Showdown added a second date in 2024, this first thing that to many was will there be midgets also.

National Pavement Midgets are on an upswing. Just four years ago they didn’t exist outsaid of the New England area or a handful of events in the Pacific Northwest. Indianapolis Raceway Park saw something that told them this division could flourish if reintroduced.

Right from the beginning with the Night Before the 500 in 2020, the sole events contested with National Midgets at IRP have not disappointed. The races were good, and the car counts respectable.

When Davey Hamilton Jr. announced they would be part of Open Wheel Showdown in Las Vegas last December any were skeptical. In the end over 20 cars participated and the race featured good racing, so there were no doubt midgets would rerun in 2024.

Not only will they participate in the November 20-22 OWS Irwindale event, but they will also be part of the OWS Las Vegas event once again November 13-25, 2024.

The Irwindale OWS event will be bittersweet. It will be the first time National Midgets have participated at Irwindale Speedway since the Turkey Night Grand Prix on November 24, 2011. The Super Modified’s will also be making their return to Irwindale the same night for the first time since 1999. The Irwindale OWS stop will be one of the biggest open wheel events held at the track in decades.

Although we’re still nearly five months away, the early midget entry list is strong. The entrant list is currently over 20 and growing. Judging by the current entrant list, there could be well over 30 cars at both events this year. There are several cars that were apart of last years event not entered as of mid-June, but expected to officially enter this Summer.

Among early entrants include defending Las Vegas OWS midget winner Kody Swanson and NASCAR Xfinity driver Jesse Love. Other notables include NEMA midget standout Avery Stoehr, 500 Sprint Car Tour winner Billy Wease, and 2023 Pink Lady Classic winner Evan Margeson among others.

National Midget teams will have the chance to compete in two high-paying OWS midget events back-to-back this November in addition to a $10,000 winner’s share each night.

Davey Hamilton Jr. is doing his part to speed up the return of National Pavement Midgets. Along with 2 Thursday Night Thunder events at IR this summer, and championship night at IRP in October, the midgets will be competing for a significant amount of money in 2024. The season will now culminate with two OWS events in November.
